New Type of Cichlid Found!

Ok, so this post doesn't have anything to do with the convict cichlid, but I just read this and thought it was too cool not to post.

In this day and age, I'm always amazed when something new is discovered. I think that most people are like me, and just figure that with as long as people have been around and factoring in satellite technology and the internet for communication and information, it would be tough to actually discover something no one else was aware of. And then a story will pop up like the one a couple of years ago, about some island off the coast of Madagascar with new types of parrots. That's just crazy to me.

But now I'm getting sidetracked. What I really wanted to mention is I found an article about some scientists finding a new species of cichlid in Venezuela. It is a new type of Laetacara dwarf cichlid that lives in shallow waters from the upper drainages of the Rio Orinoco and Rio Negro in Venezuela.

If you want to know more about these, you can check out the article here.

Hope you found that as interesting as I did and that you'll keep coming back for more, even if it isn't about the convict cichlid!

We have convicts as well. We have had them for about a year now...but just in the past 2 months noticed them breeding... Tried different ways of keeping the baby Fry...but they always ended up dying.
We have 7 convicts all together. (Got them from a friend)...i believe there are 4 female and 3 male.
Just in the last few weeks i have been keeping a very close eye on them. (BY THE WAY...THEY ARE IN A HUGE HUGE TANK....THE SIZE OF MY KITCHEN TABLE, JUST ABOUT. I'M NOT SURE HOW MANY GALLONS...BUT ITS HUGE ..AND SITTING ON A KITCHEN TABLE. THERE IS ONLY A HALF A FOOT LEFT ON EITHER SIDE OF THE TABLE.)
So What i noticed.... 1 set of parents are at one end...with a babies..... a set of parents on the other end with babies....and then there is another couple in the center making babies i believe. Which left 1 fish..OUT...all alone. She was gettin picked on alot....so we put togther a 10 gallon tank...( i think its that size)...and we put her in it alone.
Was that a good idea.....will she survive alone in there?????
Right now....the babies are still there...they haven't died yet.

Very nice blog. I am not a big convict fan but I love cichlids, especially big Americans. I agree with Dorothy Fisher, convicts are the most aggressive cichlids.
P.S. new cichlid species are found every day.

I read this and checked out some pics of these fish on the internet. These seem to come in many varieties. Some are tiny with big fins, while others are with big bodies and short fins. Some of them have awesome colours and structure like Auratus Cichlid.
